In Abhyanga’s massage, herbal powders, pastes or ghee can also be used. We practice this massage using a vegetable oil (sunflower, sesame or sweet almond) and essential oils, which have a wide range of healing properties.
It is a part of the dinacharya or daily routine suggested by Ayurveda. It’s used to relieve pain, stiffness and fatigue.
It also helps to mobilize the dosha from the peripheral to the central areas of the body, allowing its elimination by the body’s orifices. The Vata dosha is specially pacified by the abhyanga’s massage, even though the Pitta and the Kapha can also be calmed, using different massage techniques.
The Abhyanga, Ayurveda’s massage can be short lasting (50 minutes) or long lasting (90 minutes).
